Subject : Participation in “Allergic rhinitis-market research survey”
Allergic rhinitis is an allergic disorder caused by immune mediated reactions to inhaled allergens. It is a characterized by symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, itching, and runny nose. Globally, over 600 million individuals are affected by allergic rhinitis and it is a prevalent global health concern. In India, the prevalence of allergic rhinitis is nearly 25%, contributing significantly to the country's allergic burden. There is notable increase in allergic rhinitis cases in India over the past two decades and recent studies have reported incidences of 20% and 30%.
With allergic rhinitis annually there is approximately one million work days being lost and 28 million work days being restricted. Patients experience negative impact on physical, psychological, and social tasks impacting daily activities. Cognitive function and sleep quality are negatively affected by allergic rhinitis, resulting in irritability, fatigue, and decreased work performance. Nasal congestion is most troublesome symptom, closely associated with breathing difficulties during sleep. Nearly 60% of adults with AR also experience sleep disturbances. Symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and nasal itching.
Dust mites, molds, fungi, insects, outdoor pollution, and smoke are prevalent common allergens in India. Significant air pollution from biomass, fossil fuels, and vehicular emissions are contributing factors for many and open fires or inefficient stoves fueled by kerosene, biomass, coal for cooking are additional factors for many women. Research has indicated that elevated levels of sex hormones during menarche, menstruation, pregnancy, or when using hormonal contraceptives, play a significant role in allergic rhinitis symptoms in women.
At present, there are significant gaps in understanding the clinical needs of allergic rhinitis patients across India. While there have been extensive discussions on geographical differences in allergic rhinitis, the lack of published clinical data in India makes it uncertain whether these differences exist in clinical practice.
