Subject: Participation in "Common infections, antibiotic usage pattern and trend of antimicrobial resistance-market research survey"
Upper respiratory tract infections (URIs) account for millions of physician visits. Studies show that millions of antibiotic prescriptions per year are inappropriately directed toward respiratory tract infections. Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) are one of the most common type of infections constituting around 29-32% of all infections in 2018-2019 in India. Incidence of invasive S. aureus infections has increased over the past decades and is associated with poor outcomes and high mortality rates. S. aureus is responsible for almost one-third of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) accounting for a large proportion of these.
Comorbidities such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and stroke, peripheral vascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, renal failure, and cancer are commonly associated with MRSA infections and pose an additional challenge in management.
Resistance to commonly used antibiotics, last resort antibiotics is a global concern including in India. MRSA rates are increasing each year from 2016 to 2021 (28.4% to 42.6%). Antimicrobial resistance is limiting the availability of available treatment options.
Survey Rationale:
At present, there are significant gaps in understanding common infections, antibiotic usage pattern and antimicrobial resistance across India.
With this survey we are trying to understand epidemiology of common infections, antibiotic prescription pattern and trend of antimicrobial resistance in India
