Subject: Investigating the New Strategies in Glycemic Management – OAD and Injectable Therapy Survey (INSIGHT)
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistent hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. With over 460 million people affected globally, diabetes has emerged as a major public health concern, projected to affect over 700 million by 2045. Type 2 diabetes (T2D), the most common form of diabetes, is primarily associated with lifestyle factors such as obesity, poor diet, and physical inactivity, along with genetic predisposition.
Oral antidiabetic drugs (OADs) are the first-line therapy for T2D and are commonly used to manage glycemic control in the early stages of the disease. However, its effectiveness often diminishes over time as the disease progresses and pancreatic beta-cell function declines, necessitating the use of additional therapies. The combination of oral and injectable therapies offers a more individualized approach to diabetes management, particularly for patients who do not achieve adequate glycemic control with OADs alone. Several studies have explored the use of OADs in combination with injectable therapies, and the results suggest that this combination therapy can effectively manage blood glucose while addressing associated comorbidities
