Dear Dr. {{$doctorName}},

Subject: A disease and management insight survey to understand Prevalence and treatment practices in management of melasma among dermatologists in India

Melasma, a frequently occurring cutaneous disorder, characterized by facial development of hyperpigmented brown to grayish brown macules is identified as the commonest dermatoses around the world with 1% prevalence in general population and 9-50% in high-risk populations. Among Indians, occurrence of melasma is more common in females than males (4:1 ratio), aged between 14 and 54 years. Hourblin et al recorded diversity in skin tones and hyperpigmented spots among women across four cities of India, severity of which was increased with age, leading to uneven face color; melasma found in 30% middle to older aged (41-65 years) women. Melasma can be treated with various topical and/or systemic agents that targets lightening of the skin, vascular component improvement and photoprotection. However, treatment of melasma is sometimes unsatisfactory and unfavorable in terms of efficacy and safety outcomes.

This survey has been undertaken to assess prevalence and treatment practices in management of melasma among dermatologists in India.
