Dear Dr. {{$doctorName}},

Subject: A Survey amOng healthcare prOviders To understand tHe practices in management of HyperTesioN (SMOOTH-HTN)

According to the previous 2018 European and current international guidelines, hypertension is defined based on repeated office systolic blood pressure values 140 mmHg and/or Diastolic blood pressure of 90 mmHg. However, there is a continuous relationship between BP and CV or renal morbid or fatal events starting from an office SBP >115 mmHg and a DBP >75 mmHg. In 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported in India that around 63% of disease mortality is caused by non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and among the causes of all deaths, cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounts for 27%. Hypertension is the predominant risk factor for CVD, being the lead reason for 57% of deaths of all strokes and 24% of deaths from coronary heart disease (CHD) in the country.

Various classes of antihypertensive agents are available for the optimal control of hypertension. The antihypertensive agents have evolved over the span of last few years and newer agents have established improvements in efficiency and reduction of unwanted effects. The use of combination of various agents have also been effective in controlling hypertension in large number of patients. There is limited amount of data on the practice of management of hypertension patients in India. The purpose of this Survey is to understand the perceptions in hypertension management and the use of antihypertensive agents and combinations by healthcare providers.

This multicenter survey is planned to get insights about the current disease scenario and management practices of hypertension in India.
