Subject: To understand diagnosis and management of dry eyes among ophthalmologists
Dry eye disease (DED) affects hundreds of millions of people throughout the world and is one of the most frequent causes of patient visits to eye care practitioners. The prevalence of DED, with and without symptoms, ranged from 5 to 50%, DED prevalence based on signs alone was generally higher and more variable, reaching up to 75% in some populations. It is a symptomatic disease, characterized by a vicious cycle of tear film instability and hyperosmolarity. This leads to increased ocular surface inflammation, damage and neurosensory abnormalities.
Therefore, a thorough understanding of the diagnosis, and treatment is the need of the hour. Also, the diagnostic criteria and treatment of dry eyes varies from doctor to doctor and depends upon the availability of these diagnostic and treatment modalities. Hence it is important to understand the diagnostic tests used and the treatment prescribed in patients of dry eye disease.
