Subject: Participation in survey “5-Methyltetrahydrofolate (Active form of Folate) supplementation during pregnancy, preconception period and lactation”
Folate is the generic term for vitamin B9, a water-soluble vitamin that includes chemically similar compounds essential in periods of rapid cell growth and division, in the maintenance of new cells, and in the making of DNA and RNA. It is also crucial for the regulation of homocysteine in the body. Homocysteine regulation is very crucial during pregnancy as hyperhomocysteinemia leads to multiple pregnancy related complications. Folate supplementation is recognized for pregnancy and fertility support, recognition is growing that it also benefits cardiovascular health, mood, and cognition. The bioavailability and metabolism of the different folate forms vary due to their respective chemical structures. All forms of folates, natural or synthetic, must be converted to the circulating form 5-MTHF to exert their biological activity. The structurally related compounds included in the folate group are folic acid, natural folates, and 5-MTHF.
External supplementation of folate may occur as folic acid, folinic acid or 5-MTHF. 5-MTHF is a biologically active form of folate and is the most abundant form found in plasma, representing >90% of folate and is the predominant active metabolite of ingested folic acid. 5-MTHF displays better performance compared to folic acid in terms of plasma concentrations of folate. Supplementation with 5-MTHF may be a valid alternative to folic acid. Independent studies have demonstrated that 5-MTHF displays higher bioavailability compared to folic acid. The use of 5-MTHF instead of folic acid is strongly recommended for external supplementation.
5-MTHF calcium salts have proved its efficacy in humans. 5-MTHF calcium salt is stable but is characterized by a poor solubility in water. Glucosamine salt of 5-MTHF is characterized by a long-lasting stability and a peculiarly high solubility in water. These features confer to glucosamine salt of 5-MTHF a potential improved bioavailability in oral use.
There is limited real-world data available on the usage of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate supplementation during pregnancy, preconception period and lactation in India. This multicentric survey is designed to understand the usage of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate supplementation during pregnancy, preconception period and lactation in India.
