Subject: Real World
Survey to understand the probiotic prescription behaviour of
consultant physicians in India.
Probiotics are defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as
"live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts
confer a health benefit on the host". Probiotics, generally
interpreted as microorganisms that are beneficial for health, have
gained popularity over the years and have found applications in
several general health and clinical scenarios.
The relationship between probiotics and promotion of health has been studied by many researchers. Probiotics provide benefits in many clinical conditions which include the prevention of acute diarrhoea, Crohn's disease, cardiovascular and urogenital infections, cancer, lactose intolerance, cystic fibrosis, dental caries, and oral diseases.
In recent years, the list of indications for which probiotics are considered potentially beneficial have expanded. However, the correct use of probiotics in clinical practice by healthcare professionals (HCPs) appears to be complicated by a limited knowledge of the scientific basis for their use. Even though understanding the perceptions of physicians and their recommendation behaviour is vital, their stance regarding current probiotics use seems to be underreported.
There is limited data available on physician’s perception regarding probiotics use in different GI and non-gastrointestinal diseases and their current practice of probiotics. Therefore, this cross-sectional study is designed to understand the probiotic prescription behaviour of consultant physicians in India.
